The motion of the Earth on itself and in orbit around the Sun, creates the illusion of the Sun which rises daily towards the East and sets in the West. This is the principle by which a sundial functions. Each sundial is unique to any particular location and orientation of the surface, be it a horizontal plane or a vertical wall (or even a plane sloping in between!).
